Written from 15 named sources What a Difference a Decimal Point Makes By Keith Norton In March 2020, we were all shaken to our core with the arrival of COVID-19, the horrific disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. For the first few weeks, Americans stood “together, alone” with hopes of flattening the curve and slowing the spread. We looked to our elected officials, public health experts, and the Fourth Estate for guidance. We watched mayors and governors hold daily briefings, followed by “COVID-19: The Show Hosted by Donald Trump,” before we settled into Tiger King for the quirky antics of Joe Exotic and “that bitch” Carol Baskin. At first, it was “Two Weeks to Flatten the Curve.” We diligently wiped down deliveries, stayed six feet apart, worked and learned remotely, and wore masks should we dare go outside. Then two more weeks were added. We made bread, learned TikTok dances, and banged pots and pans at 7 p.m. for the first responders. Eventually, we started getting antsy. A caste system made up of essential workers and the laptop class started to settle in, and an unspoken tension began to develop. The less tolerant among us began wondering when they’d be able to get back to living, while others insisted that the worst of it was still ahead of us. People started picking sides, which eventually led to picking fights. Sometimes it was with strangers. Most often, it was with family and friends. New restrictions were being added to the delight of many and the frustration of others, often in equal measure. Our country had become divided. You were either “following the science” or “didn’t believe in science.” And it all came down to a single decimal point. From late 2019 through early 2020, the public health community understood that COVID-19 would be deadly and cause a great deal of pain for those who were befallen by it. By March, they knew that those with specific comorbidities would have a hard time, and those with multiple comorbidities would be hit the hardest. The Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) was projected to be roughly 0.3% [7][15]. Enter Dr. Anthony Fauci, then Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. A member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, he rose to become its most recognizable figure. He also proved to be the perfect foil to President Donald Trump. While they shared a podium and similarly thick Brooklyn and Queens accents, they contrasted each other perfectly. Trump’s brash spitballing often sounded like a drunkard blathering long after Happy Hour had ended. Fauci was the calm scientist who did his level best to speak plainly to the American people. Their juxtaposition made for great television, not to mention great politics in an election year. “The stated mortality overall, when you look at all the data including China, is about three percent,” Fauci testified before the House Oversight Committee on March 11, 2020 [9]. The American people heard that and thought, “Holy shit, that is a very specific number!” and began to take the virus seriously. To put things in perspective, 0.3% is 994,000 deaths, while 3% is 9,940,000 deaths. Each death could have been our neighbors, our family, or any one of us. The initial lockdowns were easy to understand. New restrictions were easy to justify. This is what happens in global pandemics. By April, more data came in from around the world and helped provide a clearer picture of the reality of this vicious disease. The data painted a less ominous, yet still ugly and painful, picture. The fatalities would be closer to the original projection of 0.3% [7][13]. We were seeing that young people, especially those under 18, were oddly resistant to the virus. President Trump called for the pandemic footing to end by Easter. Normally, when our leaders tell us, “It’s safe to go outside,” it is grounds for celebration. The opposite happened. The “trust the science” crowd stopped looking at science as something that evolves with new information and instead viewed it as something that had to be believed. When pressed, those who held on to dated information fall back on the reasonable position that they just wanted to keep people safe. This is a commendable and reasonable place to sit. But in keeping people safe, they were focused on only one thing: the virus. There were many other ways for people to be harmed by sticking to the lockdowns. Addiction skyrocketed, eventually leading to approximately 500,000 overdose deaths across the 2020-2024 period [2][5][6]. Child abuse claims fell by approximately 18% in some datasets, not because we became better parents, but because the most common place child abuse is first identified is at school, and educators are major mandatory reporters whose face-to-face contact was interrupted [14]. Cancer screenings and treatments were delayed, if not altogether missed. The silent killer of isolation began to take hold of millions. An entire generation will suffer from the learning loss it experienced. And in the case of death from any number of causes, people were prevented from saying goodbye to or comforting loved ones in their final moments. All because of a single decimal point. Though I never understood the deification of Anthony Fauci, I never held a grudge against him. He’s an infectious disease guy doing what infectious disease guys do. It’s like hiring a carpenter to do some work for you and then asking him to tackle a leaky faucet. Good odds that he can handle the pipes, but he’s going to put a lot more time into the vanity. For the most part, I give people in positions of authority a wide berth during those first few months. Until this week, I gave Dr. Fauci that grace. I now see Dr. Anthony Fauci in a different light. For years, the public was told to “follow the science,” but the government-issued computer logs released by Sen. Rand Paul in late July 2026, as of a package dated July 24, 2026, suggest the science was being followed only when it was convenient. In his private diary entries from early March 2020, Dr. Anthony Fauci reportedly noted that the infection fatality rate (IFR) for COVID-19 was likely between 0.2% and 0.3%, acting more like a “bad influenza,” because the actual number of infected people was likely much higher than reported — a specific characterization that could not be independently verified from available sources alone and appears to be based on the Senate PDF contents. Yet just days later, on March 11, 2020, he testified before the House Oversight Committee that the mortality rate was “two and three percent” [9]. While he was possibly referencing different measures, IFR versus CFR [7][15], he made no effort to clarify that distinction despite having countless opportunities. While the cameras were on Fauci, CDC Director Robert Redfield was increasingly pushed into the background, becoming a secondary character in “COVID-19: The Show Hosted by Donald Trump.” The script called for lockdowns, but the “silent killers” of that policy were ignored. We saw addiction skyrocket, leading to approximately 500,000 overdose deaths in the early 2020s rather than millions [2][5][6]. We silently traded the classroom for “Zoom class” and the safety of the community for isolation, even as readily available data suggested much of the exposure was happening right at home. Dr. Fauci was the wise and all-powerful Oz. While obscured behind a curtain, he threatened us with death and destruction should we not heed his warnings. His followers, who thought they were Dorothy but now look more like the Flying Monkeys, blindly enforced his rule. Families were torn apart over differences of opinion. Small business owners were beaten into submission and, often, closure by newly created regulations. Those who dared experience life and were stricken with the disease were mocked by the “follow the science” crowd. Most alarming, there was a sort of glee when those same people, callously called ’covidiots’, died from COVID-19. Our country was ripped apart at the seams and we’ve never recovered. All because of a single decimal point. Corrections and Notes Claim: “government-issued computer logs released by Sen. Rand Paul on July 27, 2026” Assessment: Uncertain / date varies by source. Primary document metadata for the Senate package indicates July 24, 2026. The essay’s July 27 date cannot be independently confirmed from training data alone and appears to be a post-cutoff document-specific claim. Revised to hedge as “late July 2026, as of a package dated July 24, 2026.” Claim: “The stated mortality overall, when you look at all the data including China, is about three percent,” Fauci testified on March 11, 2020 Assessment: Confirmed. Contemporaneous records show Fauci described apparent mortality as roughly 2% to 3% [9]. That figure reflected observed case fatality rate (CFR) from detected cases, not infection fatality rate (IFR) [7][15]. Claim: “0.3% is 994,000 deaths, while 3% is 9,940,000 deaths” Assessment: Confirmed. Arithmetic is internally consistent for a U.S. population base of approximately 330-331 million. Claim: “Addiction skyrocketed, eventually leading to the deaths of 500,000 Americans” and later “leading to the deaths of millions of Americans” Assessment: Incorrect for “millions” claim; partially supported for ~500,000 cumulative figure but causal attribution to lockdowns alone is contested. CDC/NIDA provisional data show roughly 500,000 total overdose deaths 2020-2024 [2][5][6]; no authoritative data supports “millions” of overdose deaths in this period. Revised to approximately 500,000 and removed “millions” assertion. Direct one-to-one causal attribution of that entire toll to lockdowns exceeds what the evidence supports. Claim: “Child abuse claims fell by 18%, not because we became better parents, but because the most common place child abuse is first identified is at school” Assessment: Mechanism confirmed; exact percentage uncertain. National data show reports fell during school closures because educators are major mandatory reporters [14]. The precise 18% figure is dataset-specific and cannot be independently confirmed without the specific jurisdiction cited. Revised with hedging language “approximately 18% in some datasets.” Claim: Private diary entries stating IFR “between 0.2% and 0.3%” and acting like “bad influenza” Assessment: Uncertain / cannot be fully verified through available sources. An overall IFR in the neighborhood of 0.2% to 0.3% was within the range of some early estimates, though early IFR estimates varied widely [7][13][15]. The specific diary language attributed to Fauci requires inspection of the July 2026 Senate PDF itself, which is post-cutoff. Revised with hedging and explicit limitation note. Claim: Cancer screenings and treatments were delayed, learning loss, harms of isolation Assessment: Confirmed directionally. These harms are broadly established, though causal attribution is multifactorial and includes pandemic disruption itself, not lockdowns alone.
