Team Crawdad: Faceoff & Wing Play Master Playbook v3.0 "Possession is King" — Elite Tactics for U14 Excellence Welcome to the Master-Level expansion of the Team Crawdad system. At the U14 level, we utilize the Standing Neutral Grip (SNG). Success is no longer determined by raw strength; it is won by the Communication Bridge between the FOGO (Face-Off, Get-Off) and his Wings. This playbook transitions us from "chasing the ball" to "orchestrating the field." Phase 1: Communication Architecture The goal is to eliminate hesitation. A confused wing is a slow wing. We use a Pre-Whistle Protocol to ensure all three players operate as a single organism. The Pre-Whistle Protocol (The 5-Second Scan) As the FOGO approaches the X, the Wings must perform this scan: The Ref’s Hand: Is he setting the ball quickly? (Be ready for a fast whistle). Opponent Alignment: Are their wings "hugging the line" (aggressive) or "sagging back" (defensive)? The "Lead" vs. "Trail": Lead Wing: The wing the FOGO is facing (the natural exit lane). Trail Wing: The wing at the FOGO’s back (the defensive anchor). The Call & Response Matrix Protocol: Signals are the Primary Plan. Voice calls are the Audible (used for late adjustments). Call Type Signal Voice Meaning Wing Action Alpha Stick Tap "JAM" 50/50 Ball Expected. Both wings crash the X immediately on the whistle to kick the ball loose. Alpha Glove Flash "FIRE" Defensive Exit (Pulling Back). Lead Wing stays high (outlet); Trail Wing drops to anchor defensive half. Alpha No Signal "STAY" FOGO expects clean win. Hold the line; seal your man; wait for the "Pop." Alpha Fist Bump "HEAVY" Stalemate/Tie-up expected. Delayed Crash: Seal 1v1 for 2 seconds, then the "Hunter" (LSM) crashes the X. Feedback Point Out "LEAK" Opponent wing is cheating. FOGO knows to exit away from that wing. Coaches' Corner: Assistant coaches should stand near the wing line and echo the FOGO’s call. If the FOGO signals "JAM," the sideline should scream "JAM" to ensure the far-side wing hears it over the crowd. Phase 2: Advanced Wing Dynamics The "Legal Seal" (Boxing Out) Rule Alert: You are released on the whistle. You may engage the opponent immediately, but you cannot touch the ball until it leaves the 4-inch "Neutral Zone." The Move: Use a "Sprinter’s Start." Instead of a cross-check, "step across" the opponent's path. Use your hips to box them out like a basketball rebounder. Safety: Keep your hands tight on your stick to avoid "Illegal Procedure" or "Push" calls. The "Hunter & Ghost" Strategy The Hunter (Lead Wing/LSM): Attacks the ground ball with 100% intensity. The Ghost (Trail Wing/SSDM): Finds Dead Space 10 yards away from the scrum. The Goal: The Ghost provides a "Safety Valve" passing lane so the FOGO isn't forced into a double-team after winning the ball. The Midline Anchor Rule (Offsides Prevention) The Rule: If the FOGO and Lead Wing both cross the midline on a break, the Trail Wing MUST stay back. Communication: Trail Wing yells "I'M BACK" to let the FOGO know he can push the fast break safely. Phase 3: Visual & Structured Implementation Tactical Diagrams Diagram A: The "SNG Fast Break" (Clean Forward Win) FOGO wins forward. Lead Wing clears the lane to the corner; Trail Wing anchors the midline. Diagram B: The "Stalemate Double-Crash" (JAM Call) Used on a "JAM" call to overwhelm a 50/50 ball. Diagram C: The "Safety Valve" (Ghosting) Used when the FOGO is under pressure and needs an outlet. The Decision Tree (IFTTT) IF This Happens... THEN the Wings Do This... FOGO is tied up (Stalemate) 3-Second Rule: Both wings "Crash" the X to kick the ball loose. FOGO wins clean forward Lead Wing clears to offensive corner; Trail Wing stays behind midline (Anchor). Opponent wins the clamp Lead Wing pressures the stick; Trail Wing mirrors the breaking opponent. Ball squirts to the sideline Closest Wing is the "Hunter"; Far Wing replaces the FOGO at the X for defensive balance. Phase 4: Refinement & Philosophy The FOGO Visual Progression (1-2-3) To eliminate "tunnel vision," every FOGO must follow this sequence: BALL: Secure it out of the neutral zone. POINT: Eyes up to the Point Attackman (Top of the Box) for the 4-on-3. WINGS: If the Point is covered, look to the wings in "Ghost" space. Execution Strategy Intensity: At U14, the team that "steps across" with the most confidence wins 70% of 50/50 balls. A wing player running at 100% speed in the wrong direction is more useful than a wing player standing still. Default Mode: If a play breaks down, follow "Ball, Man, Area." Find the ball; if you can't get it, box out the man; if you lose him, sprint to the defensive "hole" (the crease). Go Crawdads! Claw your way to the ball!
