Lax Flow — 14U Fall Ball Progression Blueprint Skip to the 9-week sequence Coaching blueprint · ~7-min read Principles Sequence Ratings Locks Don't build How built Sources Lax Flow · 14U Fall Ball Transition rides shotgun , or possession teaches nothing. ground_balls + faceoffs first is confirmed. They still need somewhere to take the ball. fast_break sits with them in Weeks 1–2 — because ground balls and faceoffs with no outlet teach nothing. Transition is the 14U game. Weeks 1–2 · calendar-fixed · possession + transition ground_balls Every possession starts on the ground. Instant diagnostic of hands. Fixed · Wk 1 faceoffs Possession engine. Also a roster diagnostic: who can even take one. Fixed · Wk 1 fast_break 14U games are transition games. Teach it before half-field sets. Fixed · Wk 2 Possession-first confirmed — pair with transition early. Default for a busy 14U club Fall Ball team: approximately nine weeks, late September through late November, two or three practices per week, three or four weekend tournaments, no weekly league schedule. A coaching default — not a claim that every team follows the calendar regardless of player evidence. P1–P8 That pairing is not taste. Eight rules hold the season. The order above is an operating directive, not a vibe. These eight rules decide what gets a High tag, what waits, and what the app is forbidden to invent. P1 Possession before schemes ground_balls and faceoffs earn possessions; without them no other game area gets exercised. Confirmed as Week 1–2 anchors. [1] P2 Extras gate man_up / man_down get a full session only after settled_offense and settled_defense have each had 2+ sessions, AND team median passing ≥5 AND catching ≥5. EMO with a team that can't complete 3 passes is a waste of a Saturday. P3 14U build = transfer, not install At 14U, “build” means small-sided, game-situation reps with decision-making baked in (constraints-led). At HS, “build” means installing a named system. Fall Ball at 14U should never look like an HS install. [7] P4 Game situations > isolated reps Wall ball and line drills are fine as warm-up / homework. Ranked session time goes to game-shaped activities. Isolated wall-ball as the main event is the #1 youth coach error. [12] P5 Transition is the 14U game fast_break / unsettled_defense / clearing decide most 14U club games — rank them ahead of settled polish. P6 Ratings adjust, never replace Live player ratings can move a game area up/down one slot; they never reorder the whole sequence. Calendar wins ties. P7 Every session touches 2–3 game areas max A 90-minute session with 10 “High” areas is a demo, not a practice. Cap at 3 Highs per session. P8 Fall Ball ≠ taper No peaking language, no reduction weeks. Load stays developmental. Tournaments are checkpoints, not culminations. Default rank · 9 weeks Transition rides shotgun in Week 1, or possession teaches nothing. P6 says ratings adjust, never replace. So the calendar has to exist first. Six early slots are bolted down. Four later slots can take a one-notch nudge — and two of those sit behind the extras gate. 14U club circuits typically host weekend tournaments throughout the 9-week window, not exclusively in Week 6. Week 6 is a mid-season tournament checkpoint ; the same tournament-week logic applies to any tournament weekend. Calendar-fixed — will not move Proficiency-dependent — ±1 only Gated extras — hold until P2 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 01 Early ground_balls Every possession starts on the ground; instant diagnostic of hands. Calendar-fixed faceoffs Possession engine; also a roster diagnostic (who can even take one). Calendar-fixed 02 Early settled_defense Lowest-ego, fastest-teaching base. Footwork transfers everywhere. Calendar-fixed fast_break 14U games are transition games; teach it before half-field sets. Calendar-fixed 03 Early → pre-tourney clearing First tournament will be lost on failed clears; must be functional by Wk 3–4. Calendar-fixed 04 Pre-tourney unsettled_defense Mirror of fast_break . Scramble defense decides early-season outcomes. Calendar-fixed 05 Pre-tourney settled_offense Now that possession + transition exist, build 2–3 dodge/pass concepts. ±1 · proficiency-dependent Slot note: weak dodging/passing → jump to Wk 3 Guardrail: +1 slot only 06 Mid-season checkpoint riding Cheap wins vs. weak clearing teams. Light install, high tournament ROI. ±1 · proficiency-dependent 07 Post-tourney #1 man_up Extras gate (P2) should now be met. EMO off settled_offense concepts. Gated · P2 08 Post-tourney man_down Inverse of man_up . Teach as 5v6 scramble + adjacent slides. Gated · P2 09 Late / pre-final ground_balls + fast_break Revisit the possession / transition engine before the last tournament. Close the loop. Calendar-fixed · recycle Override logic Ratings adjust. They never replace. Six of those slots are bolted to the calendar. The rest can take a one-notch nudge — and only if the roster is actually rated. Mark a skill at median ≤4 and watch: calendar-fixed slots refuse to slide, the extras gate stays shut unless passing and catching are both ≥5, and the third boost hits the cap. Unrated is not weak. Apply a live rating This is the decision tree working, not a demo. Calendar-fixed slots will not move. Max 2 boosted areas. field_vision is weighted lowest — hardest skill to rate reliably. ≥6 players unrated — return ask_coach_to_rate . No boost. Default sequence held exactly. Nothing marked High. Never infer unrated = weak. passing → clearing, settled_offense, fast_break · boost clearing — ≤4 ≥5 catching → clearing, fast_break, ground_balls · boost fast_break — ≤4 ≥5 shooting → settled_offense, man_up · boost settled_offense; hold man_up — ≤4 ≥5 defense → settled_defense, man_down, unsettled_defense · boost settled_defense — ≤4 ≥5 ground_balls → ground_balls · already Wk 1; extends into Wk 2 — ≤4 ≥5 dodging → settled_offense, unsettled_defense · boost settled_offense — ≤4 ≥5 face_offs → faceoffs · boost only if ≥2 players rated ≤4 — ≤4 ≥5 ≥2 players rated ≤4 (required to boost) field_vision → fast_break, clearing, settled_offense · boost fast_break · weight lowest — ≤4 ≥5 Default sequence held. 0 of 2 boosts. Extras gate closed — passing and catching are not both marked ≥5. Two instructions sit on settled_offense . The Week 5 slot note says weak dodging/passing → jump to Week 3. The override guardrail says +1 slot only; calendar wins ties. They do not agree. A coach resolves it; the default rank does not pick a winner. Decision tree Input: team skill ratings Eight skills. No auto-rank off missing data. ≥6 players unrated? Yes → output ask_coach_to_rate . No boost applied. Team median ≤4? No → keep the default sequence. Apply +1 rank boost to mapped game areas Highest-leverage fix only. Never a full reorder. Max 2 boosted areas per week? Yes → stop. No → updated ranked sequence. All 8 skill → situation mappings validated as written. Hover or focus a skill to light its mapped areas on the timeline. field_vision is the hardest skill to rate reliably; weight it lowest. Coach rerank · tournament week A nudge is not a rewrite. Safety does not unlock. Coaches can pin, demote, hold extras, reorder inside a phase, and compress a washed-out week. They cannot override safety flags, age-band rules, or another coach’s pin. When a week is skipped, the sequence drops the lowest-priority proficiency-dependent slot — never a calendar-fixed one. Pin a game area to a week Allowed. Max 2 pins per week. A pin survives all rating overrides. Demote a game area Allowed, except safety-flagged items. Demote = “Low,” not delete. Hold extras “No EMO until November” is a hard gate on man_up / man_down . The model shows a reminder. It never auto-unlocks. Reorder within a phase Free inside early / pre-tourney / post-tourney blocks. Skip a week Weather, field loss: compress by dropping the lowest-priority proficiency-dependent slot. Never a calendar-fixed one. Override safety flags Never. Age-illegal body contact, contact-to-head drills, checking progressions above age rules — blocked regardless of coach intent. [2] [12] Override age-band rules Never. Example: 10U body checking. USA Lacrosse youth rules are hard constraints, not preferences. [4] [16] Override another coach’s pin Never. Only the pinning coach — or an admin — un-pins. Tournament week · 7 days out Three bands. Same rule on all of them: no first-time installs in the final 3 days. Anything not repped twice stays Low. High cap is 2. 10U High (2 max) ground_balls fast_break Stay Low man_up man_down riding faceoffs Small-sided rules mean the game IS ground balls and transition; extras barely exist in the rule set. [9] [12] USA Lacrosse ADM field-size reductions for 10U further limit space for man_up / man_down schemes, and many 10U leagues use draw contests or omit faceoffs entirely. [2] [4] No full faceoff emphasis at 10U small-sided rules. 14U — this spec High (2 max) clearing fast_break Stay Low man_up man_down settled_offense polish 14U tournaments are decided by failed clears and 4v3s the other way. No new concepts — only sharpen what exists. HS High (2 max) settled_offense unsettled_defense Stay Low ground_balls (maintenance only) HS teams have the possession basics. Tournament week is execution and half-field identity. This is contrast, not the Fall Ball plan. Universal: no first-time installs in the final 3 days. Anything not repped twice stays Low. Kill list The same locks that hold the calendar kill these on a Tuesday. If the app does any of the following, the sequence above is theater. Coach sees a wall, picks nothing, app is dead. >10 ranked rows per session Cap at 3 Highs. A 90-minute session with 10 Highs is a demo, not a practice. “Lacrosse IQ” jargon labels 14U club coaches say “ground balls” and “4v3,” not “tactical cognition index.” Everything High when ratings are missing Unrated ≠ weak. Produces noise and destroys trust. 20-week HS install compressed into 9 weeks Fall Ball is development. A full system install guarantees shallow reps of everything. Per-player personalized session plans 22 players × 8 skills × 10 areas = unusable. Rank at team level; individual notes only. Auto-scheduling off exact calendar dates Tournaments shift. Fields get rained out. Rank by phase, not date. One weak FOGO triggering faceoff clinics every week Explicit cap: face_offs boost requires ≥2 players rated ≤4. Overrides are +1 slot, max 2 per week. “Championship phase” / taper language in Fall Ball Wrong goal for the season type. Violates the stated development objective. P8 stands. Provenance How this was built The sequence is a 14U Fall Ball ranking spec. It is not a high-school install, not a drill library, and not a taper plan. That was a choice: become the expert this calendar actually needs, and rule the others out. Chosen 14U club Fall Ball progression — a ranking engine Small-sided, constraints-led, game-situation reps. Transfer, not install. Calendar-fixed possession and transition first; ratings nudge one slot and stop. Guideline-backed where USA Lacrosse and Lacrosse Canada speak; labeled opinion everywhere else. Ruled out High-school systems installer A 20-week HS install does not compress into approximately nine weeks. At HS, “build” means named sets, slide packages, clears by call. Fall Ball at 14U should never look like that. Ruled out Isolated-rep programmer Wall ball as the main event is the #1 youth coach error. Isolated reps stay homework. Ranked time is game-shaped. [12] Ruled out Championship periodization No peaking language. No reduction weeks. Tournaments are checkpoints, not culminations. HS periodization is consensus in strength-and-conditioning generally; lacrosse-specific fall periodization is opinion — and the wrong season type here. Ruled out Per-player session engine 22 × 8 × 10 is unusable on a Tuesday. Rank at team level. Method. Eight principles → a 9-week default with two slot classes (calendar-fixed vs. proficiency-dependent) → a rating tree that never infers unrated = weak, boosts +1 only, and caps at 2 areas per week → coach pins that survive ratings → hard safety and age-band locks → a tournament-week matrix by age band → a kill list. All 8 skill → situation mappings validated. ground_balls + faceoffs first confirmed. The only correction is sequencing fast_break alongside them in Weeks 1–2 so possession skills immediately feed a game situation.
